Vikaspuri Learning Pods: Midday Meals Fueling Child Literacy

When twelve‑year‑old Rohan stepped into the modest community hall on a scorching June afternoon, his stomach growled louder than the school bell. The hall, now a vibrant learning pod, offered him a steaming bowl of lentil soup and a fresh roti. As he ate, a volunteer teacher opened a picture book about rivers. In that moment, Rohan’s hunger faded, and his curiosity surged. His story is the heartbeat of our new initiative in Vikaspuri, where education and nutrition walk hand‑in‑hand.

Building Learning Pods in the Heart of Vikaspuri

Identifying Space and Community Needs

Our team began by mapping vacant rooms in local schools, community centres, and even a cooperative society’s hall. Each space was evaluated for safety, ventilation, and proximity to daily‑wage families. Within two months, five rooms were transformed into child‑friendly learning pods, each equipped with chalkboards, donated textbooks, and colourful study mats.

Volunteer‑Led Teaching and Mentorship

Student volunteers from nearby colleges form the teaching backbone. They undergo a three‑day orientation covering child psychology, basic pedagogy, and cultural sensitivity. Once a week, a team of three volunteers conducts interactive sessions—reading circles, math games, and storytelling—tailored to the children’s age groups (5‑12 years). The volunteers also mentor older children, encouraging them to become peer leaders.

Midday Nutrition: The Bridge Between Hunger and Learning

Research from the Ministry of Health shows that children who receive a balanced midday meal are 30 % more likely to stay attentive for the full duration of a class. Our nutrition plan, designed with a local dietitian, provides a daily menu of protein‑rich dal, whole‑grain rotis, seasonal vegetables, and a seasonal fruit. The meals are prepared in a hygienic kitchen run by a women’s self‑help group, creating a micro‑enterprise that supports additional families.

Section 80G: How Your Donation Doubles Impact

Understanding the 50 % Tax Exemption

Every rupee you donate to The Global Impact Welfare Foundation is eligible for a 50 % deduction under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act. If you donate ₹10,000, the taxable income considered by the Income Tax Department reduces by ₹5,000, effectively lowering your tax liability. This deduction applies to individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), and corporate entities.

Form 10BE and CSR Eligibility

For donors who wish to claim the exemption, the donation must be recorded in Form 10BE, the annual return for charitable contributions. The form requires the donor’s PAN, the amount donated, and the registration number of the NGO (GIW is registered under 12AA and 80G). Corporate donors can also claim the contribution under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) budget, meeting the 2 % of average net profit requirement.

Results on the Ground

Literacy Gains and Attendance Boost

Within the first six months, attendance rose from an average of 62 % to 89 % across the five pods. Standardised reading assessments show a 27 % improvement in fluency among children who attend the pods regularly. Moreover, the midday meal program has reduced reported cases of fatigue and early‑day absenteeism by 40 %.

Voices from Volunteers and Parents

“Seeing my daughter smile after a nutritious lunch and a fun lesson is priceless. I no longer worry about feeding her while she studies,” says Sunita, a daily‑wage mother of two.
“Teaching these kids reminded me why I chose education as a career. Their eagerness fuels my own passion,” shares Arjun, a college volunteer.
